Stop the Drive Through
Project Overview
The YNPA proposes a strategic initiative to encourage travelers en route to Kangaroo Island to stop, explore, and support the local communities of Yankalilla and Normanville. This project aims to transform our towns from pass-through points into must-visit destinations, boosting local business, tourism, and community engagement.
Why This Matters
Every year, thousands of vehicles pass through our region on their way to the Cape Jervis ferry. While we welcome this traffic, most travelers bypass our towns entirely—missing out on the unique experiences, services, and hospitality we offer. This project seeks to change that.
Project Goals
Increase Visitor Engagement: Encourage travelers to stop for coffee, meals, shopping, or sightseeing.
Support Local Businesses: Drive foot traffic to local cafés, bakeries, shops, and accommodation providers.
Promote Overnight Stays: Position Yankalilla and Normanville as ideal pre-ferry stopover destinations.
Enhance Regional Identity: Strengthen the visibility and appeal of our towns as vibrant, welcoming communities.
Key Strategies
Signage & Wayfinding: Install attractive, informative signage along key routes highlighting local attractions and services.
Digital Campaigns: Launch targeted social media and web content promoting “Pause Before the Island” as a travel tip.
Visitor Packages: Partner with local businesses to offer discounts or bundled experiences for ferry-bound travelers.
Rest Stop Enhancements: Improve amenities and visibility of public rest areas to encourage longer stops.
Expected Outcomes
Increased revenue for local businesses.
Greater awareness of Yankalilla and Normanville as destinations in their own right.
Stronger community pride and economic resilience.
